History
This car was originally ordered by the Canadian Northern Railway as #3605 from Canadian Car & Foundry, lot 438, in
1919. It was delivered as Canadian National 3605, reflecting the new government organization. Its cost at the time
was $23,675. Shortly thereafter, it was renumbered to CN 8605. By 1970 there was a surplus of head-end passenger
equipment, and cars of this class were being retired. CN 8605 last shopped at CN Transcona Shops (Winnipeg) in
1966. It was given a reprieve when it was renumbered to CN 73900 for use as a storage car at the Moncton Express
Freight Shed. Along with 8665, it was delivered
to Hillsborough in 1981, the first cars on the site. It was
extensively refurbished in early 1983 and serves as our Ticket Office and Gift Shop.
It is 23.4m (76' 9.5") long, 4.3m (14' 1.5") high, and weighs 63.3 tonnes (69.6 tons).
