History
This flanger snow plough was built by CN in 1952 from a 40 ton steel frame box car (413949) that had been
built in 1917 by the Canadian Car & Foundry Company on lot 396. The car was transferred from Western
Canada to the Atlantic Region about 1970 to help relieve a shortage of flangers in the East. Most of the
Atlantic Region’s own cars were bi-directional, but this design can operate in only one direction.
It was the last of its type on the Region. The S & H acquired it in 1988.
When rebuilt the steel frame was covered with wood sheathing and insulation. This flanger was severely
damaged in the 1994 fire at Hillsborough, but it is planned to undertake some restoration work on it
during 2002. The work planned is to get it re-trucked, the metal cleaned and stabilized with a coat
of primer paint.
Steve Hunter, a former S&H member, has graciously allowed us to post his pictures here. We are grateful for
the opportunity to show some of our equipment as it was before it came to the S&H.
